Sommers Set for Big Weekend in Sponsor's Hometown

It’s one of the biggest race weekends of the year in the Midwest and Gabe Sommers is set for four days of racing at the 49th annual Oktoberfest race weekend.  Fresh off winning the Rookie of the Year title with the TUNDRA Series, the Plover, WI driver will compete in the Futures Feature Thursday night, the Trickle 99 Friday night and then the ARCA Midwest Tour Oktoberfest 200 Saturday and Sunday.

“I’m very excited,” said Sommers.  “Fest is one of the most fun times of the year.  I just have to stay focused race by race, but at the same time you can’t hold back one night because you have to race the next night.”

A rain-soaked weekend prohibited the 15-year-old driver from competing as much as he would have liked last year in just his second time in a Super Late Model.  Now with a full season of Super Late Model racing under his belt, he hopes that changes this year.

“Making the field every night is the goal,” said Sommers.  “There is always a lot of tough competition and it brings out many of the best drivers throughout the Midwest.  I feel we’ve had a solid season this year and hopefully we can show how far we’ve come this weekend.”

Making the weekend even more special for Sommers is the fact that he’s racing in one of his biggest sponsors’ hometowns.  The La Crosse-based Kwik Trip came on board the No. 15 Gabe Sommers Racing machine this year and has been a big supporter of the team.  To get the chance to race in their backyard is something exciting for Sommers and his team.

“It’s pretty cool to race in your sponsor’s hometown,” said Sommers.  “We are so grateful for everything they have done to support our team this year and it’s a relationship we look forward to continuing to build over the next few years.”

“To have a company like Kwik Trip believe in your team and what you are trying to accomplish is special,” said Gabe Sommers Racing Team Manager Dan Sommers.  “It really says a lot about our team and the drive we have to have their support. They have helped us take our program to the next level and we hope to make them proud this weekend.”

Sommers Becomes Youngest TUNDRA Series Rookie of the Year

Gabe Sommers captured TUNDRA Series Rookie of the Year honors with a 13th and 17th place finish in twin features over the weekend at Dells Raceway Park.  The results were good enough to make the 15-year old the youngest driver to win the series’ Rookie of the Year award.

“It means a lot to win Rookie of the Year,” said Sommers.  “There was a lot of great competition and it feels really good to bring home this honor for my team and sponsors.”

They key to Sommers’ Rookie of the Year run was consistency.  The Plover, WI driver earned four top-ten finishes and one top-five finish throughout the season and owned an average finish of ninth.

“The key components were finishing in the top-ten week in and week out,” said Sommers.  “And just putting together solid runs and finishing races.  We didn’t’ have a single DNF in the TUNDRA Series, which was huge.”

Now Sommers sets his sights on Oktoberfest race weekend at LaCrosse Speedway.  Sommers’ No. 15 Kwik Trip, Allied Cooperative, Wysocki Family of Companies machine will compete in four straight days of racing from October 4th – 7th.

We had a great outing at the Midwest Truck Series opener at Madison International Speedway last weekend. We won our heat race and had a strong run in the feature. Looking forward to our first race at Kaukauna this Saturday. Thank you to our great Sponsors and Bruce Nuttleman for putting this video together.
