Gabe Sommers picked up his second TUNDRA Series win of the year, this one coming at his home track of Golden Sands Speedway (WI). The race in Plover marked the season finale for the TUNDRA Series and with strong runs all season long, the 16-year-old driver finished second in points.

“It felt good to win two TUNDRA races, there is a lot of competition in that series,” said Sommers.  “We weren’t even really looking to contend for the championship.  I don’t know that we could have caught Casey (Johnson, TUNDRA champion), but it wasn’t really our focus.  It was really cool to have such a great year with that series though.”

Sommers qualified 12th, but with the invert started from the pole for the 108-lap feature.  While he was able to stay in the top position all day, it wasn’t without challenges and a handful of late-race cautions.  The Plover, WI driver was able to hold strong on restarts to take the checkered flag.

“The car was very good in the race,” said Sommers.  “We made some adjustments before the race.  I think the cautions helped us out to let our tires cool down and then go back green.  We really saved tires for when we needed them most and I think that’s the reason we won.”

Next-up for Sommers is a return trip to Golden Sands Speedway on Friday, September 13th for the final race of the Wisconsin Challenge Series.
